Pupils from St Albans School were invited by Stephen James Enfield to take part in an exclusive competition, to ‘Design a roof that rocks’ for the new MINI Clubman.
The brief required pupils to channel their imagination and creativity and produce an eye-catching roof that would reflect the car’s fun, dynamic and sporty spirit. Pupils were given absolute freedom when it came to their design, so that they could produce a truly original and engaging piece.
Held in partnership with Stephen James, the BMW/MINI centre in Enfield, the competition ran during the summer term.
The judging panel, which included MINI Brand Manager, Dan Beddow and Gary Calvert, Head of Design & Technology at St Albans School, spent a number of hours deliberating and discussing the entries, impressed by the creativity and understanding of the brief displayed by pupils.
After much deliberation, Fourth Former Sam Jarman’s entry, entitled ‘MINI Madness’, was chosen as the winning design. The judges were very impressed by his artistic skill and creativity, with Dan Beddow commenting: “The calibre of entries we received was extremely high and the submissions really reflected the spirit of the MINI Clubman. Sam’s winning artwork represented the fun and dynamic feeling of the car and we are excited to see his design appear on the MINI.”
Jonathan Gillespie, Headmaster of St Albans School, added: “The competition tested our pupils’ creative skills, whilst giving them a unique opportunity. Being presented with a brief that required them to design an original roof for a new car offered a very different challenge in art and I congratulate Sam and all our prizewinners for creating such original and engaging entries. We look forward to hosting the car and Sam’s winning work here at the School later this month, so that all pupils can see how creative ideas can be brought to life.”
George Stockbridge was named runner-up with his very impressive and superbly drawn ‘First Man on the Moon’ design and highly commended certificates were also awarded to Hugo Stephens; Alex Daniel; Nabeel Syed; Saul Lotzof; Madoc Miller and Thomas Chapman.
